If you are already in graduate school or are thinking about graduate school, you have probably experienced an overwhelming feeling of “Uh-oh, can I do this?” or “How am I supposed to balance everything I have going on?” Fear not, current and future students. I will introduce you to a whole new world of balancing acts. A few balancing issues that grad students have are family, money, and time.
1. Graduate School and Family
Whether you have a family or are planning to expand your household during or before grad school, Reyna Gobel’s article, 5 Ways Students Can Balance Family, can help you maintain balance between school and family. Her article can be customized to many age groups, so you can learn how to provide a good living for your children, no matter what stage of life they’re in. In the article, she mentions what to expect with balancing family and school because you don’t want to set higher expectations of yourself. Also, if you currently have a family, you know that it can be costly, so use this resource to help balance your family and schoolwork.
2. Graduate School and Money
Just like having a family, school itself can be expensive. Many students have difficulty learning how to balance their budget while in school either part time or full time. You can breathe, though, knowing that money can come to students in many different ways. For instance, take a look at Michael Morella’s article, 5 Strategies to Pay for Graduate School. Morella discusses the many ways that students can earn money for school, such as financial aid, work studies, and scholarships. If you are unfamiliar with these sources of income for yourself as a student, Morella’s article can bring light to your financial woes.
3. Graduate School and Time
When you think about balancing your time, what do you think about? Do you get immediately stressed out, thinking that you can, and will, never become organized enough to feel balanced enough in your schoolwork? If you visit PhDStudent’s site where we discuss managing your time and stress during school, you may feel a lot better. One thing you want to do is understand that you are not alone in feeling imbalanced. The next thing you want to do is start small: write out your schedule, go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, and get your work done ahead of time instead of procrastinating.
